One of the most surprising and beautiful stops of the whole trip was Gosau Lake in Austria. I had seen some photos before, but nothing really prepared me for how stunning the views were in person. The lake sits beneath massive alpine peaks, with crystal-clear water and forests all around... it felt like a scene from a fantasy movie.
We started hiking around the lake, thinking it would just be a short loop, but the trail kept going and eventually led us to a second, smaller lake hidden deeper in the mountains. That’s where the real surprise happened.
It was warm, the sun was shining, and I decided to go into the water for a quick swim. As I stepped in, I noticed fish swimming nearby, really close. Then, a bunch of them started coming straight to me, completely unbothered. I held out my hand, and they just gathered around it, gently nibbling like they were curious or thinking my fingers were food. Some even came to my feet.
It was such a simple but unforgettable moment. These friendly little fish, the stillness of the lake, the fresh alpine air...it all felt surreal.
The whole area around Gosau left a big impression on me. The nature there was some of the most impressive I’ve seen anywhere in the Alps. And that unexpected connection with the fish? I’ll remember it for a long time.
