Shades of White

One March, right at the end of winter, I went to the Ciucaș Mountains with a few photographer friends and my boyfriend at the time. We had this plan to photograph the snowy landscapes...those quiet, wide views, with soft light and untouched snow. But the moment we arrived, the weather took a turn. It started snowing, and it just didn’t stop.

For the whole weekend, we were stuck at Ciucaș Hut. It snowed heavily day and night, non-stop and we couldn't go anywhere. Everything was white and wild outside. So we stayed in, played cards, laughed, and took some fun photos in the deep snow around the hut. It wasn’t what we planned, but it had its charm. The hut was cozy, the food was good, and the internet actually worked well, which made it surprisingly comfortable considering how isolated we were.

After about three days of this constant snowfall, we were watching the snow removal vehicle trying really hard to clear the road. Our friends who were supposed to leave on Sunday barely made it down the mountain. The cars couldn’t come up anymore, so getting out was a challenge in itself. My boyfriend and I decided to stay for the whole next week. We were working remotely, and we hoped that if we waited long enough, we’d get at least one clear day for photos.

And we did. On the sixth day, just before we had to leave, the sky finally opened up. That morning, I was able to see the mountains for the first time, buried under a huge blanket of fresh snow. There was color in the sky, soft shadows across the deep, untouched snow, and this calm, glowing light that made everything feel fresh and unreal. After all those days of grey and endless snowfall, it felt like a gift.

In that trip I took some of my most favorite winter photos from the Romanian mountains. It reminded me how much I love winter and how deeply I enjoy photographing these frozen landscapes. The snow, the storm and the time spent with friends... made me feel caught in a beautiful, unpredictable world, where everything slowed down, making space for unforgettable memories.
