Storms, Snow, and Northern Lights: A Dream Night in Tromsø

Tromsø welcomed us with snow, a lot of snow. We only had one day and one night there, but the city gave us unforgettable memories. Everything was covered in a thick, beautiful layer of white, and we felt like we had stepped into a winter postcard. We wandered the streets, soaking in the peaceful northern atmosphere, our boots crunching through snowbanks taller than we were used to.

By sunset, we took the cable car up the hill to catch a view over the city. But the weather had other plans.. it was stormy, cold, and wildly windy up there. Still, the landscape was breathtaking. Thick clouds rolled over the mountains and fjords, yet below us, the city peeked through, glowing quietly under the storm. I managed to take a few blue hour photos, and even snapped some special ones with my friends, the wind freezing our faces but not our smiles.

I had been feeling sick for days, but strangely, the cold seemed to push the illness out of me. With every gust of Arctic wind, I started to feel lighter, clearer. Maybe Norway had its own kind of healing.

But we were still a bit sad... it was our sixth night in Norway, and the skies had been cloudy every evening. No sign of the northern lights. We kept checking all the Aurora apps, hoping.

Then, like in a dream, around 8 p.m., the sky suddenly cleared. For two magical hours, we had a window. And that’s when it happened! Above the city, green waves of light began to move, slow and surreal. The Aurora Borealis.

It was the first time I had ever seen it. I was speechless. We all were. Just standing there on the hill, completely in awe, unable to believe that it was finally happening.

Later, when we went back down to the city, we saw it again, softer this time, a more delicate version, dancing gently above Tromsø’s snowy rooftops.
