Laos wasn’t originally part of my sabbatical plan. But after my unexpected return to Europe and then heading back to Asia, my path shifted, and that’s how I found myself in Luang Prabang. I ended up staying 11 days, and I loved every bit of it. Life there moved gently, with slow walks by the river, sunsets from the hilltop, and quiet nights exploring the peaceful streets. I tried so many delicious foods... and it turned out to be the cheapest country I’d visited in Asia so far.
Nature surrounded the town with a soft, traditional beauty. It felt like a place suspended in time. And looking back, I now see that this was the calm before the storm. I was supposed to travel by boat to Thailand after Laos, following the Mekong River. But right before I was about to start the journey, on March 10th, the world began to change. Borders started to close. New rules were coming in. COVID was no longer something distant... it was becoming real, and everything was about to change.
