"The most beautiful mountain under heaven"

My mission while staying in Hongcun was to finally visit Huangshan (Yellow Mountain), one of the most photogenic and iconic landscapes in China. For many photographers, it’s a dream. And for me, it felt like the Ceahlău Mountains of China... only 10 times more massive and dramatic.

The jagged peaks, ancient pine trees clinging to the cliffs, and steep stairways carved into stone seemed from a dream. I was hoping for those famous low clouds and misty seas, but the weather didn’t fully cooperate. Still, the views were absolutely breathtaking.

What surprised me, though, was the mix of people on the trails. Huangshan is known for its accessibility, and in some parts, it’s fully paved with endless stairs. I even saw an elderly woman being carried in a chair by two men, calmly enjoying the views while being literally lifted through the mountains. It was unbelievable, a strange blend of wild nature and tourist convenience.

Despite not getting the exact light and fog I’d hoped for, it was one of the most impressive mountain ranges I’ve ever seen.
